Heavy rain can quickly raise water levels, especially in Nexus filters or raised ponds.
Install an overflow pipe or ensure your existing one is clear and directed to a safe drainage area.
Without one, your filter could flood or spill dirty water back into the pond.
Strong winds can damage external equipment.
Ensure UVs, air pumps, and feeder lids are sealed tight and protected from exposure to heavy rain or wind-blown debris.
Use weatherproof housings or covers where possible.
Storms can knock out power, which means no filtration or oxygenation.
If you’re in a storm-prone area:
Invest in a battery backup air pump or generator
Minimise feeding before/during the storm to reduce waste buildup
· Thunderstorms often follow long, hot spells that lower pond oxygen levels. When the storm hits, low atmospheric pressure further reduces oxygen in the water—putting koi under stress. If you're adding PURE bacteria, oxygen demand increases briefly, making aeration even more critical.
· ✅ Run air pumps, fountains, or waterfalls before and during the storm
✅ Don’t switch off oxygenating equipment
✅ Only dose PURE products when oxygen levels are stable
· Maintaining strong oxygen levels is one of the best things you can do to safeguard your pond life during wild weather.
Do not dose blanketweed treatments or medications right before or during a storm.
Heavy rainfall will dilute treatments and disrupt effectiveness, potentially leading to imbalance or wasted product.
If strong wind or hail is forecast, a net or temporary cover can help protect fish and stop debris from blowing in.
Be sure it’s secure and allows oxygen exchange — avoid full tarps unless you also run extra aeration.
Once the storm passes:
Remove debris like leaves and twigs
Check water levels and top up (with your Evolution Aqua Dexox) if needed
Inspect all equipment for damage
Test water quality (especially ammonia and pH)
Storms stir up sludge and can wash contaminants into the pond.
Use PURE Pond or PURE+ Filter Start Gel post-storm to support your biofiltration and keep water clear.
